Chapter Five

Col. Ramirez: "I am sorry, Señor Savage, but there is no yacht such as the one you have described. You, yourself, heard what the harbor master said."

Ramirez: "My patrol boats, too, searched the bay-- the whole area-- for hours... And found nothing. But we don't give up. Our men are still out there... Looking."
Doc decides to pay a visit to the land recorder's office.

Doc enters the office and asks for Don Rubio Gorro.

Mona recognizes Doc and tells him Gorro is out to lunch.

Doc explains to Mona that the copies of the land documents he received were destroyed in a fire before he had a chance to look at them. He asks Mona if she can remember anything about them.

Mona: "Oh, yes. It is very strange, señor. The deed was signed by the chief of the Quetzamal tribe, but there is no Quetzamal tribe. According to the history books, it became extinct 500 years ago, disappearing into the jungle without a trace." She goes on to say that even so, there were legends in the small mountain village where she lived that the tribe was still around, but it was over the edge of the world. She asks if Doc can believe such a thing.

Doc: "Yes. My father got there. Somehow, I must get there, too."
Mona: "You know, I was planning on returning to my village in a few months... But perhaps I can leave now and guide you there."
Doc accepts her offer and they arrange to leave in the morning.

As Doc is leaving, Don Rubio arrives.
Rubio: "Uh, are you all right?"
Doc: "Shouldn't I be?"
Rubio: "Yes, uh, of--of course, of course. It's just that i heard there was some kind of problem last night."
Doc: "No. No problem whatsoever. Adios, Don Rubio."

And so, Doc and his crew, along with Mona, leave for the mountains in the morning.

But not without being noticed.

Don Rubio Gorro grabs for the phone.

The jungle is thick and foreboding.

But it doesn't stop Doc's expedition.

Gorro meets Captain Seas as his launch comes ashore.
Gorro: "They--they'll never find the place. That dirty little tramp in my office, she could never lead them to Quetzamal."
Seas: "That's what I'm counting on. Lots of money is at stake."
Gorro: "Uh, talking about lots of money, I could use a little money. Maybe a small advance?"

Seas: "Don't bother me now."
Gorro: "Uh, but sir, don't I deserve a little consideration? I mean, after all now, I was the one who brought the deed and the map to your attention. Uh, we are partners, are we not?"
Seas: "When Savage is out of the way, that's when we'll settle accounts. Any objections?"
Gorro: "No, sir."

At their camp, Monk is cooking. He asks Mona to please get him some water.

As she fills the pail, she is watched.

Doc takes a butcher knife from the table.

A perfect throw.

Doc comforts Mona for a second, then gets down to business. He asks Monk to bring him a vial.

Johnny: "Jumping jellybeans. That snake is the spitting image of the one painted on the native's chest at the Eastern Cranmoor building."

Doc milks the snake's venom.

He then spends a long night analyzing the venom.

The expedition continues with the crew singing "La Cucaracha."

Accompanied by Ham on the harmonica.

Finally they arrive at Mona's village where Ham and Monk take in the local scenery.

Don José: "It is only a story, a legend. There is no such a place as Quetzamal. I never been to Quetzamal, only to the edge of the world."

Doc: "Don jose... Do you think you could lead us there? It's very important."

doc0253.gif
doc0254.gif

Don José: "Very well, but only as a favor to Mona because I know her since she was such a little señorita. Come back here tomorrow at dawn."

Mona begins making plans for the journey but Doc tells her it's all taken care of...and she can't come along.

doc0255.gif
doc0256.gif

Mona: "But I want to go with you. I'm not afraid, Doc."
Doc: "Well, I know you're not... But for your own safety, I think it's best you remain here, this village with your own people."

Mona: "I love you."

doc0257.gif
doc0258.gif
doc0259.gif

Doc: "Ah, there's no room in my life for love, Mona. There was a girl once. We were to be married. She was kidnapped by the men I had been pursuing. They threatened to kill her if I didn't drop the chase. I gave in. I had to."

Doc: "Later, when she was returned safely to me, I realized there could never be a future for us. I realized if I were to do what I had chosen with my life, there could never be a loved one who could be used against me... Or harmed because of me. Do you understand?
Mona: "I suppose so."

doc0261.gif

Doc: "Mona, you're a brick."
